If I ever have this problem with another tranny I'll simply get a used tranny with a warranty and swap. I'm an engineer and tend to do a good deal of my own auto work. I have been married for almost 20 years and my wife would never tell me to cave to her demands for a car that would primarily be mine and vice versa.I've had this problem with cars and tractors If it is the OP’s wife and she doesn’t want him to get a manual because she has to drive it sometimes, then that’s a different story and requires a different tactic. As I mentioned above, gender never even entered my mind. However, we don’t even know if that is who he is referring to. In the vein of you mentioning writing losing important nuances, I think he was actually referring to me saying that if I were paying for the car, then the person I’m sharing it with would have to accept my wants and that I was claiming the OP pull this “caveman stunt” on his wife. Further, if I was foolish enough to pull this caveman stunt on "my woman," I'd be sleeping on your couch for many, many months! cars of her own and who has driven all of the many man. Anyway, in an attempt to not have this thread fall completely off the tracks, all I'll say is there are many assumptions baked into the above statement.and, being "fair but gentle" has kept me happily married for 20+ years to a woman who, by the way, has owned several man. This is an example of where communicating in writing can sometimes lose certain important nuances, etc. (*this is in not a guarantee that another $3500 M3 will not break your heart) It'll probably end up as my full-time DD at some point, but I'm trying to stave that off as long as possible. It does get great mileage though, it's cheap to run, and hasn't put a foot wrong in 4 years/95,000 miles. And in terms of cheerful, when I drive my wife's Mazda3 (which I daily a good amount as well) lets just say it's got good steering, handling, and a nice shifter - all the same qualities as a P5 - but for me, the novelty wears off after a while, and then it's just another econocar. The P5 is cheap and cheerful, and paying $4500 for one is not cheap. I paid $3,500 for mine and I drive it 100 miles/day*. 61k is low miles but this car will not be that much better than a car that has twice that and has the same, or not quite as much rust.Īn NB short shift kit will not fit the P5. $4500 is too much for that car if it has rust. Note, because I have a full-blown disease, I've already looked into a Racing Beat exhaust, RPF1 wheels, Eibach springs/Tokico shocks, and a Miata Roadster short shift kit.assuming the one for the 5-spd NB fits. Should I rob a bank and get an E36 M3? Thanks in advance! Thoughts? Should I do it? Will it last? Anyone with real-world ownership experience? Kindly let me know. I suspect that I could acquire the car for +/- $4,500. Before I pulled the trigger, I would get an independent pre-purchase inspection. ![]() Though the car is clearly not a rocketship, it did make me smile so it's quick enough for my purposes. I drove the car and was pleasantly surprised.I could certainly tell that the Protege and the Miata share the same blood lines. However, I did notice what I believe to be more significant rust behind the rear bumper cover. I crawled under the car and observed some surface rust - nothing too troubling. The car lived in the Northeast so I'm cautiously concerned. I understand Proteges have a history of rusting. Exterior is a 8.5/10 and interior is a 9/10. Manual trans 61K miles no sunroof (ugh!) everything works. I plan to keep the SUV (too much $ dumped into it to keep in proper running order) as well as an NC and NA that I am also blessed to own.both modded to my liking.Īnyway, I have my eye on a one-owner 2002 Protege 5 (the wagon). I've concluded that I want a "beater" to DD. The gas needle goes flat damn-near every time I start it or change the radio station! I recently made the fatal mistake of calculating how much I spend on gas annually and am now clinically depressed. ![]() I'm currently DD-ing an SUV but it is a thirsty pig. I'm in the market for a cheap but fun and reliable DD. ![]() I have an admittedly first-world problem that I'd like you to help me solve.
